Gas Boiler Prices 2021As a very important home appliance, your hot water boiler needs to be in tip-top condition. It may be that you are looking to replace an old gas boiler or trying to buy a brand new one, but what type of boiler should you go for as average prices can range from £550 upwards.

Your gas boiler runs your hot water & central heating, which can account for over 50% of the cost of your annual energy bill costs. So it’s important to choose the right one.

To help you with your decision, we have produced a handy guide to the types of boiler available. We aim to answer the most practical questions for you.

Questions like “how much do gas boilers cost in 2021, how much does it cost to install a new gas boiler, and what does it cost to replace my gas boiler?”.

How Much do Gas Boilers Cost in 2022?

The first thing you should bear in mind is that there are different types of boilers and not every type of gas boiler will suit every type of home.

The 3 main types of gas boiler that you will find are:

  1. Combi boilers – see our article about 3 best combi boilers
  2. System boilers
  3. Conventional boilers

You will also find mention of “Condenser boilers”, but this is not really a different appliance, it refers to how the boilers use a condensation recovery process to boost efficiency to over 90%.

Because there are so many variations in power output, energy rating, size and manufacturers, we will start with a general guide to boiler costs and later give some more specific examples of prices.

  • What does a combi boiler cost? Average prices can range from £550 to £1,500
  • How much do system boilers cost? Average prices can range from £600 to £2,000
  • What are conventional boiler costs? Average Prices can range from £700 to £2,500

As you can see, there is quite a wide price range between the cheapest gas boilers and the more expensive ones.

How much does it cost to install a new gas boiler?

The cost of installing a new or replacement gas boiler will be totally influenced by:

  1. Whether it’s a brand new installation.
  2. Is it a “like-for-like” swap?
  3. Are you replacing your old system with a different type of new system?

The cost of a like-for-like replacement is going to be a lot less expensive than if you are making a significant change. For a straight forward replacement, it’s just usually removing the old and fitting the new to the existing plumbing & electrics.

Whereas a major change of system could entail a major overhaul of the plumbing and/or electrics.

The labour cost of a straight-forward installation of a combi boiler or system boiler is usually between £500 to £1,000 (plus the cost of the appliances & fittings).

Here are a couple of examples:
  1. Removing the current combi boiler and fitting a new combi in the same place can cost on average £2,000 and be completed within a day, if there are no problems.
  2. Removing the current combi boiler and installing new combi, in a different place can cost on average £2,500 and take up to 2 days, if there are no problems and depending on the amount of work needed to relocate.
  3. Removing and replacing an older regular system boiler (one with a tank) and installing a new combi boiler can cost on average £2,500 to £3,000 and take 2 to 3 days.

How much does it cost to replace my gas boiler?

There are a few elements to the pricing and those are the cost of the boiler, the cost of any fixtures & fitting and the cost of the labour. Basic fixtures & fitting may be included in the cost, but if extra plumbing or electrical work is needed then that needs to be taken into account also.

If your heating and hot water plumbing has not been cleaned for a few years, then you should also consider investing in having a power flush.

This will really help your heating & hot water pipes circulate the water more efficiently, because sludge does build up in the central heating pipes over the years.

A professional central heating power flush can cost from £250 for 5 radiators and be £30 to £35 per extra radiator.

Finally: Things to think about when replacing your boiler.

green divider

One of the first things to think about, excluding the cost at this point, is how much work load is the appliance going to be subject to.

Are there going to be lots of simultaneous demands on the supply of hot water. Such as 2 or 3 showers and a big central heating demand? Conversely, is your property a small house or apartment with light demands upon hot water?

Combi-boilers provide “instant hot water”, but will only be able to cope up to a certain level of demand. In that case you may need a more powerful system.

Other points to note are how good is your mains water pressure and how much space do you have to fit the appliance. Not forgetting is your power supply adequate and, of course, how much of a budget do you have?
